A significant employment law theme that gained greater prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic and has continued to generate increased interest and attention among employers is the regulation of the employment of individuals commonly referred to as “gig workers”.

However, the rise in gig work has proven to not be solely a phenomenon of the pandemic but has continued to grow and evolve both in terms of the understanding of what constitutes gig work, the addition of gig workers by Canadian employers to their existing employee complement, the regulation or planned regulation of gig work by the federal and provincial governments and the focus by third parties such as labour unions on advocacy and representation of this growing segment of the Canadian labour market.

To assist employers with this quickly evolving landscape, in this webinar we will provide attendees with an overview of the developments in the rise and regulation of gig work in Canada to date, including defining what constitutes gig work, highlighting significant gig work legislation that was recently enacted as well pointing to what regulation(s) Canadian employers can expect with gig workers in the future.

We will also review recent case law of interest impacting employers with gig workers as well as the state of unionization in Canada with respect to gig workers.
